ATHENS, Greece – After years of praying out of sight in old warehouses and basements, Athens’ Muslim population is preparing for the opening of the city’s first state-funded mosque. The city, despite being home to hundreds of thousands of Muslims, stands as the only European capital without one. Due to open its doors in August, the mosque has been in the works for more than a decade, slowed by bureaucratic inaction as well as opposition by neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn. But thanks to the efforts of the Muslim Association of Greece, the long-awaited opening of this official house of prayer seems close.
